The workshop will provide an historical overview of Chinese Rock Music from the mid-1980s and describe the social and political conditions under which this musical genre developed in Mainland China. Showcasing some well-known artists as well as some rare live recordings, the sessions will introduce the buzzing Beijing Punk scene of the 2000-2010s and examples of the ongoing diversification in Chinese independent and alternative music since the 2010s, including influences from national minorities music and quasi-religious tendencies in present day China. Attendants will have the chance to individually explore a wide range of Chinese Rock and Punk music. There are no language requirements.

Meet the facilitator: Joshua Seufert has been the Chinese Studies Librarian at the East Asian Library since 2018. Before coming to Princeton, he was in charge of the Chinese collections at the Bodleian Library of the University of Oxford. His scholarly interests include Chinese bibliography and Chinese intellectual history. In his spare time, he likes reading European comics. During his studies in Beijing in the early 2000s he enjoyed the then lively Rock and Punk scene of the city.
