This discussion will highlight the life and work of Beatrix Farrand, the first professional female landscape architect.  As a woman of the early 20th century, her achievements were extraordinary in a modern world dominated by men in both design and construction.  Her motto, inscribed in the entryway of her home: “Intellectum da mihi et vivam” translates to, “Give me understanding and I will live” and speaks to her passion, intelligence, and vast knowledge.   Her background, education, professional life, and work, as well as her contributions to the Princeton University campus landscape, help us understand her importance and legacy for our respective professions as women in construction in the 21st century.
