This talk discusses the recent rise and development of new conservative right movements in the Southern Cone according to a historical approach which may help understand the region. In Spanish.
ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER
Gerardo Caetano (Ph.D. Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina) is a historian and political scientist. He was director of the Instituto de Ciencia Política between 2000 and 2005. He is a member of the Uruguayan Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Argentine Academy of History, and the Spanish Royal Academy. He also was president of the high council of the Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) for Uruguay and Argentina. Among his many publications are “Secular Uruguay” (2014), “A Brief History of the Dictatorship” (2019), and “José Mújica. Other Possible Worlds” (2014). He has published many books and essays and has received national and international awards, more recently the Latin American and Caribbean Award in Social Sciences in 2022, CLACSO’s highest distinction.

Historian and Political Scientist, Universidad de la República, Uruguay
Gerardo Caetano, historiador y politólogo. Doctor en Historia, Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Fue director del Instituto de Ciencia Política entre 2000 y 2005. Miembro de las Academias de Letras y de Ciencias del Uruguay. Académico correspondiente de la Academia de la Historia en Argentina y de la Real Academia Española. Fue presidente del Consejo Superior de Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (Flacso) e integrante del Comité Directivo del Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (Clacso) por la subregión conformada por Argentina y Uruguay. Primer presidente de la Asociación Uruguaya de Historiadores y de la Asociación Uruguaya de Estudios Internacionales. Ha publicado numerosos libros y artículos en áreas de su especialidad, por los que ha obtenido varios premios académicos nacionales e internacionales. El último de ellos es el Premio Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Ciencias Sociales 2022, máxima distinción de Clacso.
