Details
In this service-based learning session, participants will have the opportunity to directly engage with one of the most crucial, challenging, and unremarked spheres of American healthcare: the healthcare of refugees. After a morning of two brief lecture-style presentations on the health vulnerabilities of refugees and the structural obstacles in addressing them, participants will be guided through reflective discussions over lunch before departing campus for an official affiliate site of the U.S. Committee for Refugees & Immigrants in Highland Park, NJ. Throughout the afternoon there, the group will deepen their understanding of the health issues and care systems of displaced persons while aiding the nonprofit in its mission to promote both the medical health and overall well-being of refugees resettling in New Jersey. Pre-medical students and students interested in health policy are especially encouraged to join.
Meet the Facilitator:
Maria Karakousis is a Class of 2026 Princeton undergraduate who is deeply interested in the conceptualization of healthcare as a humane endeavor attending to the varied dimensions of illness beyond the curing of disease. She is particularly interested in the intersections of the individual, community, and care that enable survivors of structural violence to recover their health and power in different ways. When she is not studying for her Molecular Biology degree or engaging with diverse forms of community service in the Princeton area, Maria loves running and playing the piano.

The only cancellations that will be accepted within 72 hours prior to the trip without the penalty fee must include a doctor’s note. Otherwise the $50 no-show fee will be charged.
