PCS will be coordinating with the Friends of Burlington Island to do an educational tour and BioBlitz of Burlington Island, a uniquely preserved island within the Delaware River with little ecological study.

We will be traveling to Burlington Island via pontoon boat, departing from Bristol Wharf (PA) and arriving on the island during its low-tide period, and leaving before the tide elevates. We will meet at Wawa/Princeton Station and travel via van to the Burlington City Public Boat Launch.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about Burlington Island, the first colonial settlement of New Jersey and a unique player in local indigenous, colonial, and recent history. The area was first used by the Lenni-Lenape, before being settled by the colonial Dutch. In the early 1900s, an amusement park was built on the island before it burned down in the 1930s. Join us to explore this incredible island, and to characterize the wildlife found here to potentially guide policy towards making this a future State Park or conservation area, while learning about the importance of local involvement in land stewardship!
