The City Treks career exploration program provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to connect with employers and alumni working in high-demand industries. On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, eight groups of 10-15 students will travel to New York City to visit two organizations from the same industry. The structure of the day enables students to compare and contrast different work environments, missions, and industry roles, as well as make real connections with alumni and industry experts. All Treks will take place in New York City. Transportation will be provided for students leaving from campus.
The Publishing & Journalism Trek will visit Penguin Random House and the New York Times. Penguin Random House is the international home to more than 300 editorially and creatively independent publishing imprints, including Alfred A. Knopf, which was founded in 1915 and has long been known as a publisher of distinguished hardcover fiction and nonfiction. Among the list of Knopf authors are the Nobel Prize winners Kazuo Ishiguro, Gabriel García Márquez, Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, V. S. Naipaul, and Orhan Pamuk; the Pulitzer Prize winners Robert A. Caro, Cormac McCarthy, Richard Russo, T. J. Stiles, Anne Tyler, Jane Smiley, and Lawrence Wright; as well as the authors Joan Didion, Yaa Gyasi, Tess Gunty, Emily St. John Mandel, Ian McEwan, Haruki Murakami, Tommy Orange, Maggie Shipstead, Cheryl Strayed, Michelle Zauner, and Gabrielle Zevin. This visit will be a great opportunity to learn more about the book publishing industry and the many paths a career can take. Students will learn about the finance, publicity, marketing and editorial aspect of publishing. The employees love books but are not all English majors!
The New York Times is powered by the idea that independent, deeply reported journalism fuels a healthy and engaged society. Their reporters, columnists, editors, engineers, designers, data analysts, developers and marketers breathe life into the most important topics of our time and tell stories that might otherwise go untold. This visit will interact with Investigative Reporting, Newsroom Audience Team, and NYT Engineering.
As a Wintersession offering, registration for City Treks is first-come, first-served beginning on December 11. All interested students must fill out a registration form and will receive an update on their status (registered, waitlisted, declined) on a rolling basis through December 22nd. Accepted and alternate students will also need to attend a short, virtual orientation session prior to the trip.
**NEW WINTERSESSION TRIPS NO-SHOW PENALTY**

The only cancellations that will be accepted within 72 hours prior to the trip without the penalty fee must include a doctor’s note. Otherwise the $50 no-show fee will be charged.
