Poetry occupies a significantly large space in the public sphere in South Asia. In addition to the expected areas of literature and performing arts, poetry is routinely performed in different domains of everyday life, including religious, social, and political. This music concert will present various genres of Hindi-Urdu poetry that are routinely performed as part of religious rituals and social practices. A wide range of poetic texts and musical genres will be chosen from classical and folk traditions. The concert features Swar Taal and Sur Taal Sangam, two musical groups from New Jersey and it is sponsored by Princeton’s Program in South Asian Studies and the M. S. Chadha Center for Global India. Please contact Dr. Fauzia Farooqui if you have any questions. fauzia@princeton.edu.
