Mediating Medicine: Kazakh Women’s Writings and Languages of Health Reform in Early Soviet Kazakhstan
This paper considers the way that Kazakh women working within Soviet institutions wrote about and participated in public-health reform in early Soviet Kazakhstan. Through a close reading of Kazakh-language women's journals and pre- and postnatal advice books, it argues that these women used the Soviet Union’s attention to women's and children's health in Central Asia to articulate a language of communal well-being rooted in pre-revolutionary Kazakh reformism, Islamic conceptions of cleanliness, vernacular turns of phrase, nomadism, and women’s embodied and domestic knowledge.
