An engineer from Moscow arrives in a remote provincial city on a routine assignment to inspect a factory part. Upon arrival, reality immediately begins to unravel: a restaurant chef serves him a cake shaped exactly like his own head, the local history museum features living wax statues of absurd historical events, and when he tries to leave, he finds himself trapped in a logic-defying administrative nightmare from which there is no physical escape.

A haunting, surrealist comedy-thriller that blends Kafkaesque mystery with Perestroika-era anxiety, the film uses eerie lighting, uncanny set designs, and a cold, detached visual palette to create a world where truth, history, and identity have been completely erased by bureaucratic myth-making.

A prophetic cult masterpiece that captures the surreal, existential disorientation of the Soviet Union’s final years, Zerograd depicts a society where the iron cage of bureaucracy has become an inescapable reality.
