REEES Film Series: Reconstruction (dir. Lucian Pintilie, 1969)

After two young men get into a drunken pub fight, state prosecutors offer them a deal to avoid prison: they must re-enact their brawl on camera for an educational propaganda film warning youth against anti-social behavior. What begins as a petty, absurd administrative exercise quickly degrades into a nightmare as the overbearing officials demand greater emotional authenticity, pushing the exhausted young men to a shocking and tragic climax.

Utilizing a quasi-documentary visual style combined with stark, sun-drenched realism, the camera observes the grueling re-enactments with unsparing detachment, illustrating how state bureaucracy forces citizens to perform curated versions of their own lives for institutional consumption.

Often considered the greatest Romanian film ever made, Reconstruction is an intense, deeply disturbing look at how bureaucratic control inflicts real, physical violence under the guise of civic instruction.
