When a scribal error accidentally creates a nonexistent officer named Lieutenant Kijé in the official military records, the Tsar demands to know who this officer is. Fearing punishment for their mistake, the court bureaucrats choose to fabricate Kijé’s entire life rather than admit the error. Kijé is dutifully promoted, exiled to Siberia, pardoned, married, and eventually given a lavish state funeral – all without ever existing. Meanwhile, a real officer who was mistakenly recorded as dead is stripped of his identity and rendered a non-person.

Adapted from Tynianov’s eponymous novel, this sharp, satirical comedy of errors highlights the ultimate bureaucratic delusion: that official paperwork matters more than physical reality. The film’s formal brilliance is anchored by Sergei Prokofiev’s famous, lighthearted musical score, which ironically underscores the tragicomic absurdity of imperial rule.

Lieutenant Kijé remains one of the ultimate cinematic parables about institutional gaslighting, demonstrating how a system will rewrite reality itself to protect administrative pride.
