Ardis: Americans Publishing Russian Literature during the Cold War

Ardis Publishers was unique in that it was dedicated to Russian literature in both English and Russian, but its founders were Americans with no Slavic background. Ardis published some 400 titles, roughly half in English and half in Russian. The Russian books were smuggled back to the Soviet Union and included the banned books of the Stalinist period and the censored books of the 1970s and 1980s. Ardis introduced the prose of Tsvetaeva, Akhmatova and Mandelstam to English-speakers, as well as the first annotated translation of "The Master and Margarita." In Russian, Ardis published Nabokov, Mandelstam, Brodsky, Aksyonov and Sokolov among many others.
