Details

While aversion and avoidance are understandable and principled responses to the appearance of generative AI in translation circles, they do not provide the degree of specificity needed to intervene effectively and prevent abuse. This presentation attempts to formulate principles of thinking about AI’s use that can help practitioners keep their footing, and their balance, amid uncertain and changing circumstances.

Professor in the Departments of Slavic & East European Languages and Comparative Literature

Russell Scott Valentino’s work has been published by the NY Times, Reaktion Books, The Harvard Review, Yale University Press, and a dozen other literary magazines and book publishers. Former editor-in-chief at The Iowa Review and publisher of Autumn Hill Books, Valentino has received support for his work from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Howard Foundation, PEN America, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of State. He served on the 2022 jury for the National Book Awards. His translation of Miljenko Jergović’s Kin (Archipelago Books, 2021) received AATSEEL’s 2023 Best Prose Translation award. His translation of Vladimir Propp’s Historical Roots of the Wondertale (with Sibelan Forrester and Miriam Shrager) is due out in fall 2025 from Indiana University Press. He blogs at russellv.com.
