Flyer for Documenting Violence in Writing and Translation

Join us for a hands-on conversation between PTIC Translator in Residence Hanna Leliv and Ukrainian writer and scholar Oleksandr Mykhed, about his recent book "Language of War: Chronicles of the Invasion." This work of nonfiction begins on the first day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and chronicles the next 13 months from a deeply personal perspective, weaving in the voices of those whose lives have been changed forever by the war. Oleksandr will share his strategies for conveying harrowing events through human stories, and Hanna will talk about her experience translating an essay from the book, "Small Big Evil," and the particular challenges she encountered.

Speakers

Hanna Leliv

Hanna Leliv is a native of Lviv, Ukraine, where she works as a freelance translator and runs literary translation workshops at Ukrainian Catholic University. She was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Iowa’s Literary Translation Workshop and mentee at the Emerging Translators Mentorship Program run by the UK National Center for Writing. Her translations of contemporary Ukrainian literature into English have appeared in Asymptote, BOMB, Washington Square Review, Circumference, and elsewhere. In 2022, Astra House published Stalking the Atomic City: Life Among the Decadent and the Depraved of Chornobyl by Markiyan Kamysh in her translation. She has most recently served as a faculty fellow at the Dartmouth College the Leslie Center for the Humanities.

Oleksandr Mykhed

Writer, Translator

Oleksandr Mykhed is a writer based in Kyiv, Ukraine. He is the author of nine books. His highly acclaimed nonfiction book, I Will Mix Your Blood With Coal (Nash Format, 2020), an exploration of the Donbas and Ukrainian East, has been published in German (Ibidem, 2021) and is forthcoming in English and Polish. His essays were published in the Financial Times, the Guardian, and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Oleksandr has participated in literary residencies in Finland, Latvia, Iceland, France, and the United States. He has been selected as the first 'Ukrainian writer in virtual residence’ at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford, for the academic year 2022/23. He is a member of PEN Ukraine.
