Social Media, Fake News and Communication during the Pandemic: COVID-19 Lessons and the Need for Recalibrating Future Health Communication

This talk will share key insights distilled from the research team’s projects undertaken in Singapore in the past 2.5 years to examine media activities, infodemic and social media content’s impact during and post-COVID-19. Findings from studies which examined public sentiments, vaccine hesitancy and misinformation will be discussed. Observations regarding changes in the health and risk communication paradigms will also be covered, together with implications for health communication and technology arena in the post-COVID world.

May Lwin is the chair and president’s chair professor of communication studies at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University Singapore. Lwin specializes in strategic and health communication. Her research projects involve the utilization, design and assessment of digitally mediated communication and social media to influence health behaviors.
