Details

For the Dalit–anti-caste–movement in India and for all those invested in the struggle against caste, a site of singular importance is Chaityabhumi in Mumbai. Chaityabhumi is a shrine built at the site where Dr. B.R. “Babasaheb” Ambedkar, an economist, jurist and lawyer who shaped India’s Constitution and led the movement against caste and untouchability, was cremated on December 6, 1956. Every year, between 1-6 December, millions of Dalit-Bahujans from across the nation and the world visit this shrine and pay tribute to their revolutionary leader. This documentary film brings to light the history and cultural politics of how people commemorate December 6 as well as Babasaheb Ambedkar at Chaityabhumi. It explores the site’s relevance in contemporary India, and dwells on the tensions of caste and public space in Mumbai that the annual commemoration at Chaityabhumi generates.
