Regional elections in the east of Germany have shocked the German political system, and raised doubts about the survivability of the current government and the centrist coalition that constitutes its support. Is there a return to the unstable politics of the Weimar Republic in the early 1930s, when the combination of extreme right and extreme left destroyed democracy? What role does the economic stagnation and the geopolitical threat from Russia play in the destruction of the old mainstream political parties of the Federal Republic?
