Denise Mauzerall | Synergies and Co-Benefits of a Clean Energy Transition in China
Details
China is currently the largest global emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG), having surpassed the EU in 2000 and the U.S. in 2006, while continuing to face serious public health challenges due to air pollution. At the same time, China is a global leader in renewable energy, boasting the highest installed solar and wind capacities as of 2023. However, it continues to build coal power plants, revealing the complexity of its energy transition. Mauzerall’s research emphasizes that decarbonization must consider both supply and demand strategies. Sectoral synergies — particularly in decarbonization of the power sector, transport, residential heating and industry — offer substantial potential to simultaneously address climate change, air pollution and public health cost-effectively.

Dr. Denise Mauzerall is the William S. Tod Professor of Environmental Engineering and International Affairs at Princeton University where she is a core professor in the Center for Policy Research on Energy and Environment. Mauzerall’s research group conducts technically rigorous, policy relevant interdisciplinary research that explores opportunities for synergies between air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation and associated health and food security benefits around the world. Recent research has focused on interventions in the residential, transport, power, industrial and agricultural sectors in China. Current research is increasingly focusing on air pollution and the benefits of decarbonization of the power sector in India, and on analyzing demand-side applications for clean hydrogen in the U.S. that maximize environmental and economic benefits. She is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and is the co-chief editor of the new journal Sustainable Horizons.
