Using high-resolution population density estimates from nighttime light and other geospatial data, combined with insights from the census and the China Household Finance Survey, this study examines rural population trends in China. It identifies stable population patterns in towns of certain sizes, suggesting thresholds for sustainable small-town development. While the drivers of this stability appear diverse, the findings emphasize the importance of aligning public investment and rural revitalization strategies with regional dynamics and population trends.
