This talk starts from the premise that contemporary authoritarianism can be understood as one of the ways in which democracy itself is being reconfigured today. Rather than focusing exclusively on regime breakdown or illiberal backsliding, Lago explores how authoritarian practices increasingly operate within democratic settings—through law, elections, public opinion, and moral claims—while simultaneously reshaping what counts as democratic legitimacy.
