In the world of scientific computing, most software is open-source software designed for Linux, meaning that the source code must be downloaded, unpacked, configured, compiled and installed in the Linux environment. This makes installing scientific software more complicated than installing your average application on Windows or macOS. This puts computational scientists at a disadvantage as this makes it much harder for them to access the software tools they need to do their research.

This workshop introduces the fundamentals of installing open-source software on Linux. It will cover the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS), The different steps of compiling code, what typically goes wrong at each step and how to fix it, and how to specify options so that your application is built to meet your needs.

Learning objectives: Participants will strengthen their skills at compiling and installing software.

Knowledge prerequisites: Familiarity with the Linux command-line.

Hardware/software prerequisites: For this workshop, users must have an account on the Adroit cluster, and they should confirm that they can SSH into Adroit several hours beforehand. Request an account on Adroit: https://bit.ly/3wicSaH (VPN required if off-campus). Details on all of the above can be found in this guide (https://bit.ly/3QER9Sv).

Workshop format: Lecture and hands-on
