This is an intensive five-day workshop. To register for this intensive workshop, please register on part 1 of 5.

With the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement this past summer, discussions of activism and civil rights movements once again dominated American political discourse. In this Wintersession immersion program put forward by Breakout Princeton, we will grapple with these issues, their historical underpinnings, and their political implications in a discussion-based setting. We will hear from individuals ranging from activists to academics who study protest and social equity movements. Additionally, while focusing heavily on the BLM movement and its predecessors, we will also take a look at student activism and protests at Princeton and other universities and international protests in countries such as India and Belarus. Finally, we will also focus on looking at social movements and protests through the lens of media, including through television shows and video games. In the end, participants will walk away with a new community of activist friends and an actionable framework to learn and engage more in activism in their own communities, including Princeton.

Please note that Breakout is offering 2, fully-immersive programs this year -- the one described above and another on Healthcare and COVID-19. Please only sign up for one of these two programs so that the widest range of students possible can participate.

What to expect:
-Discussions of articles, podcasts, films, and other media related to activism and social justice
-Guest speakers such as activists, policymakers, academics, and other experts
-Preparation for exploring service opportunities and engaging in activism
-Reflective discussions on the topics discussed and creating action plans for the future
-Mixture of interactive discussion/activities and lecture style presentations
-Participants will also be able to take part in a remote service experience

Meet the facilitator:
This program is hosted by the Breakout Princeton Board within the Pace Center for Civic Engagement.

Breakout Princeton strives to offer students the opportunity to expand their education through immersive service-learning activities that engage with critical issues facing communities across the nation and inspire sustained commitment back on campus. All aspects of our program integrate service, reflection, and education as we strive to heighten participants' awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them to meaningfully engage in service throughout their lives. Since travel is currently restricted, Breakout aims to fulfill this mission by offering immersive online experiences that still allow students to explore issues of relevance, such as social equity and healthcare, in an intimate group setting.
