Details
Facebook election disasters. Tiktok addictions. Instagram bullying. Social credit scores. Social media has become a pervasive part of life in the 21st century, influencing not just our personal lives but our society.
This Wintersession course will explore ethical design methodologies using social media as a case study. Participants will learn why straightforward technological solutions to social problems are often not just ineffective at their stated goal, but may actually harm the communities in which they are deployed. Participants will be introduced to design justice principles, which aim to create effective and ethical solutions to social problems. Participants will then apply these methodologies to design a social media platform that promotes equity and community while avoiding the pitfalls of existing platforms.
This is an intensive five-day workshop. To register for this intensive workshop, please register on part 1 of 5.
What to expect:
The course will consist of a lecture on the first day introducing design justice principles. An invited speaker (TBA) will discuss the impact of designing technology using such processes. Attendees will use the middle three days to work on a design project centered around more ethical social media. On the last day, attendee groups will give lightning presentations on their projects.
Meet the facilitators:
Technology for a Just Society (JuST, just.cs.princeton.edu) offers a community where students can explore how technology can deepen social inequity, as well as how it can be leveraged to advance social justice and address other major societal challenges.
