Join Dr. Rebecca Hernandez (Mescalero/Warm Springs Apache and Mexican American) via Zoom and Dr. Anu Vedantham, Library Liaison for Indigenous Studies in person to expand your understanding of Indigenous Studies. Dr. Hernandez will share a detailed presentation about American Indians in the United States. We will then discuss the materials in our library collection that relate to that information, especially in regard to Indigenous languages that need revitalization. Finding items about Indigenous communities and understanding what they mean can be a challenge. We will discuss basic concepts in Indigenous Studies, engage with physical items including the new Indigenous Cultures bookshelves on the first floor of Firestone, and explore online exhibitions. We will converse about how to understand what an item might mean for different observers, and how to be best prepare to re-examine our history. We will share projects that engage Indigenous community members, and provide guidance on how to begin your own exploration of Indigenous Studies.
