Location-based information is growing exponentially about the Earth and its inhabitants. This workshop introduces tools to find features or events on the Earth’s surface, display them as maps, tables and charts, and analyze the patterns shown. QGIS, a desktop Geographic Information System (GIS), is explored in the session. QGIS is open-source software that can be downloaded for free and runs on most operating systems. No previous knowledge of GIS or digital geographic data is needed. Attendees need only some familiarity with computers and curiosity about visual representations of the Earth and those who live on it.

Meet the facilitator:
Tsering Wangyal Shawa – is the Geographic Information Systems and Map Librarian at Princeton University. He has widespread experience in geospatial data selection, software and hardware and holds degrees in the areas of library science, education, geography, and cartography. Mr. Shawa was born in Tibet and has lived and taught geography and cartography to high school and undergraduate students in India, Nepal, Kenya, and Sudan. William Guthe – is a Visualization Analyst for Princeton’s Research Computing group in the Office of Information Technology. He and Tsering Wangyal Shawa train faculty, students and staff to use GIS, analyze geospatial data, and produce maps and interactive presentations. Bill also helps others run geographic analyses using Python, R and other software. He worked at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and other State agencies, and gave courses for the Rutgers Continuing Professional Education Program in Geomatics.
