Entrepreneurship for Social Impact series: "Communicating to Create Understanding and Connection"

This workshop will teach entrepreneurs interested in social impact the mindset and techniques needed to effectively engage with thought leaders, influencers in the field, and people affected by the social issue in question as they explore its ecosystem. The principles of empathetic and non-biased communication taught in the workshop will enable the participants to discern the need(s) of the beneficiaries of the solution, collaborate with those driving change in the area and secure the support of those with the resources to enable change.

The participants will learn how to speak, listen and ask questions to create connection and to gain a critical understanding of the issue they are addressing that ultimately will enable them to design an effective and realistic solution beneficial to the society.

This workshop is created in partnership between a global technology consultancy Thoughtworks and the program “Humanities in Entrepreneurship” which aims to harness the skills and training of the Humanities graduate students to contribute to the public good through innovation and entrepreneurship. The workshop is open to entrepreneurs and entrepreneurially-curious graduate students of ALL divisions, including STEM, Social Sciences and Humanities.

Speakers: Michelle Jewell and Jeremy Gordon.

Michelle Jewell spent 8 years as a consultant before joining the Talent Team at Thoughtworks in 2014 where she is currently the Head of Learning & Development for North America. She enjoys the strategic and organizational challenge of putting programs, processes and resources in place to enable career development with a special dedication to empowering new hires to be successful, and supporting leaders as they progress through their leadership journeys. Outside of work, Michelle is a mom to an energetic and entertaining toddler. And when she has free time, she loves to fill it with craft projects and reading, hopefully accompanied by a delicious cup of tea!

Jeremy Gordon is Head of Legal for Thoughtworks North America, he focuses on client-facing matters and sits on Thoughtworks’ North American leadership team. As counsel to Thoughtworks’ global business leaders, he influences, negotiates and teaches in service of Thoughtworks’ mission to create extraordinary impact on the world through its culture and technology excellence. He also acts as Thoughtworks’ global legal lead for Corporate Development and M&A, Intellectual Property Matters, Corporate Social Responsibility and Export Control/OFAC/FCPA compliance. During his 14 years at Thoughtworks, he has served as the Head of Legal for Thoughtworks’ global products division as well as Head of Legal for Thoughtworks’ regional operations in India, South Africa, Spain and Uganda. Jeremy obtained his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law (magna cum laude), with an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, sailing and lacrosse.
