Heavy industry faces unique challenges in sustainability. Large, centralized facilities, megaton-scale-plus production volumes, and high energy/temperature demands in mean that even small changes in manufacturing practices can have large impacts on environmental emissions. In this lecture, we will discuss historical examples of sustainability in heavy industry, followed by an examination of ongoing challenges related to the energy transition and CO2 emissions reductions.
