Learn More about Sandeep Mulgund:
The earliest phase of my career after Princeton centered on software R&D related to artificial intelligence, rather primitive by today's standards. From there my interests expanded into human/computer interaction, visualization, and human decision-making support.
My subsequent roles related to management consulting in the commercial world, followed by systems engineering activities in support of federal sponsors. That was the beginning of my shift away from what I'd call pure technical work towards more analytical and planning-oriented work centered on military operations and strategy.
The latter half of my career was more focused on this area, working with a wide range of organizations in the Department of Defense. Prior to retiring I had the opportunity to work for several years in a senior civilian role in the U.S. Air Force, in which I led several global efforts related to airpower operations and strategy. The work involved leading teams to develop plans for how to approach enterprise-level challenges, and collaborating with Air Force organizations around the world to implement those plans. These efforts included quite a bit of collaboration with key allies around the world, giving regular presentations to Air Force senior leaders, and getting hands-on in the implementation of the concepts and strategies we were developing.
