GradFUTURES Learning Cohorts (GLCs) are a series of interdisciplinary seminars and co-curricular learning opportunities that bring together students, alumni, faculty, and industry partners to focus on current societal, industry, and/or global trends.

Graduate students from all disciplines explore the vast topic of sustainability in a collaborative environment with academic researchers and industry leaders. Through presentations, case studies, short readings, and discussion participants develop an awareness of the issues at stake.

Join us for the kick-off session with two speakers from academia and industry.

Stephen Kotkin, the John P. Birkelund ’52 Professor in History and International Affairs, co-director of the Program in History and the Practice of Diplomacy, and director of PIIRS, will serve as acting director of the Fung Global Fellows program for the 2021-22 academic year. The Fung Global Fellows program brings exceptional international early-career faculty members working in the social sciences and the humanities to Princeton for a year of research, writing and collaboration around a common theme. For 2021-22 the theme is Sustainability.

Matt Helgeson, Head of Sustainability at Siemens USA. Helgeson manages the implementation of U.S. programs that support its carbon-neutral goals including the ongoing transition to a zero-emission fleet, installing the requisite electric vehicle infrastructure at targeted locations, identifying distributed energy and energy efficiency projects across key Siemens U.S. sites, and working with internal and external stakeholders and partners to help the company‘s customers meet their own sustainability targets. Siemens was the first industrial company to pledge to become 100 percent carbon neutral by 2030 and announced this past December it has successfully passed the halfway mark.
